An Amber Heat-Health Alert has been issued for the South West, including Exeter, by the UK Health Security Agency and Met Office. The alert is in effect from 12pm on 11 July to 9am on 14 July.
High temperatures are expected to place significant pressure on health and care services, with increased risk of illness and mortality, especially for those aged 65+, people with health conditions, and the very young.
Care settings, including hospitals and care homes, may see indoor temperatures exceed clinical safety thresholds. Staff shortages and transport disruption could affect care delivery.
Other likely impacts include power demand surges, medicine management issues, and travel delays. Vulnerable people living alone are particularly at risk.
Residents are advised to take action:
- Stay hydrated and keep cool
- Avoid the sun between 11am and 3pm
- Wear light clothing and SPF 30+
- Check on neighbours, especially the elderly or unwell
- Know the signs of heat exhaustion – confusion, dizziness, nausea
