Citizens Advice Devon is cautioning residents to be on alert for cold callers falsely claiming to represent the charity.
The callers, allegedly from a company named Clear Start, tell people they are working with Citizens Advice to help clear their debts for a fee of £80 per month. In one incident reported in South Devon, a caller pressured a client, threatening the possibility of bailiff action if she didn’t sign up for the plan.
Wailim Wong, Communications Officer for Citizens Advice Devon, said, "We only became aware of these calls after one of our clients informed South Dartmoor Community Energy that she no longer needed help with her energy debt because this company had contacted her, claiming to take care of it."
He added that there is no evidence these calls are legitimate. He advises anyone who receives similar calls not to provide payment details or personal information. "If you are uncertain about the authenticity of a call, take the time to consult with friends, family, or contact us directly at Citizens Advice."
Janie Moor, Chief Executive of Citizens Advice South Hams, emphasised that the organisation does not collaborate with private companies for debt management. “We would never share personal information without consent,” she said. "Clear Start Accountants, based in Manchester, have informed us that they are also investigating these fraudulent calls."
Citizens Advice Devon offers free, independent debt advice to all community members. Wailim Wong urged anyone in Devon receiving these calls to report them so the issue can be assessed further, and more people can be warned. He can be reached at wailim.wong@southhamscab.org.uk.
Residents who encounter similar situations should report the calls to Action Fraud at 0300-123-2040, or reach out to their local Citizens Advice if they are unsure of the call's legitimacy.
