Residents from across Devon are celebrating after being named in the King’s New Year Honours list, recognising their outstanding contributions to community life, education, healthcare, and public service.
The honours highlight the dedication of local professionals, volunteers, and community leaders whose work has had a lasting impact across the county.
Among those receiving one of the highest awards, Professor Stephen Ernest Belcher of Exeter was appointed a Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) for his services to climate science. Fellow CBE recipient Martin Lynn Davies, from Honiton, was honoured for his work as chair of Cosmic, supporting employment opportunities for people with disabilities.
An Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) was awarded to Jonathan Bishop, Chief Executive Officer and Executive Headteacher of Cornerstone Academy Trust in Cullompton, in recognition of his services to education in Devon.
Several Devon residents were also appointed Members of the Order of the British Empire (MBE). Vanessa Claire Ford of Totnes was recognised for her contribution to mental health nursing, while Professor Christopher Jeremy Tredwin of Yelverton was honoured for his work in general practice.
Voluntary and community service featured strongly in this year’s list, with numerous British Empire Medals (BEM) awarded to individuals who have made a difference at a grassroots level. Honourees include Samantha Louise Abrahams of Plymouth for her work with La La Choirs, Gillian Rebecca Ainslie for her dedication to community sport, and David Rodney Allen of Exmouth for services to judo.
Others recognised include Diane Mary Fuller of Sidmouth for her leadership in local health forums and Victoria Louise Seymour of Ottery St Mary for services to skills development.
David Harry Stembridge KC was honoured for his community service in Newton Ferrers and Noss Mayo, while John Vincent of Exeter received recognition for his work tackling social exclusion through public libraries. Commodore Stephen Thorne RD, based in Cullompton, was also recognised for his community contributions.
The honours reflect the breadth of talent, commitment, and compassion found across Devon, celebrating individuals whose efforts continue to improve the lives of people throughout the county.
