People are being encouraged to get involved in 16 Days of Action, a campaign to raise awareness and end gender-based violence.
Running annually from 25 November until 10 December, the 16 Days of Action campaign is a global call from individuals, organisations and communities for an end to gender-based violence and for the prevention and elimination of violence against women and girls.
To mark the campaign this year, organisations across Devon are hosting a calendar of events and activities to help bring communities together to raise awareness and shine a light on the support available.
Cllr Laura Wright, Exeter City Council Deputy Leader and Member Champion for Safety of Women and Girls at Night, said: “Every year we call upon the people of Exeter and beyond to unite as part of a global call to end gender-based violence and stop violence against women and girls.
“According to police figures, around 18,000 people were subjected to domestic violence in Devon last year, of which 72% were women. In reality, that figure is likely to be a lot higher as sadly not all incidents are reported to the police.”
Throughout the 16 days this year, organisations in Devon are hosting a range of and activities and events.
One of the most popular events is the Reclaim the Night march in Exeter, which takes place this year on Thursday 27 November at 6pm. There will be a banner making workshop beforehand at 4pm at St Sidwell’s Community Centre.
