Detectives investigating the circumstances surrounding the death of a man in Exeter city centre have issued an appeal for information.
Witnesses are being sought after emergency services were called to Sidwell Street at around 3pm on Saturday 10 January.
Concern had been raised for the welfare of a 41-year-old man who was found in a public stairwell between Efes Grill and Taco Bell.
He died at the scene despite the best efforts of members of the public and paramedics.
While initially treated as non-suspicious, the man’s cause of death is currently unexplained.
An investigation is continuing to establish the full circumstances of the incident.
As part of these enquiries, a man aged in his 30s from the Exeter area was arrested in connection with the death and subsequently released on police bail.
The deceased man’s next-of-kin have been informed.
Detective Inspector Michelle Westlake said: “Enquiries are ongoing into the circumstances surrounding this tragic death, the cause of which is currently unascertained.
“There was a significant emergency services response in Sidwell Street at the time.
“We are appealing for witnesses who live near or were present in the surrounding areas of the stairwell, or the roads leading to and from it, between approximately 1.15pm and 3.15pm on Saturday 10 January.
“If you saw or heard anything which could assist our investigation, please get in touch.
“We are also seeking any CCTV, dashcam or mobile phone footage that could be relevant to our enquiries.”
