Emergency services were called shortly before 3pm on Sunday 25 January to Exmouth Beach following a report of a possible body seen near the shore.
Police say the body of a man was found along the shoreline at Exmouth Beach on Sunday afternoon. While formal identification has yet to take place, it is thought to be Matthew Upham, one of two swimmers who disappeared in rough conditions during the traditional Christmas morning swim at Budleigh Salterton, when several people got into difficulty.
Devon and Cornwall Police confirmed officers were called shortly before 3pm on Sunday, January 25, following reports of a possible body near the shore. A spokesperson said: “Emergency services attended Exmouth Beach after receiving a report of a possible body. The body of a man has since been recovered. Formal identification is ongoing, but the family of a 64-year-old man from Budleigh Salterton has been informed.”
Last week, the body of the other missing swimmer was discovered at Sandy Bay in Exmouth. Although formal identification has not yet been completed, police believe the body to be that of a 47-year-old man who failed to return to shore during the Budleigh Salterton swim. His next of kin has been notified.
The identity of the second man has not yet been made public. Inquests are expected to be opened into both deaths.
