Citizens Advice Exeter is running a series of community roadshows across the city to raise awareness of scams, the harms caused by gambling and the importance of having an up-to-date will.
The initiative – funded by Exeter City Council’s community fund – aims to reach people who may not currently access the charity’s free, confidential advice service.
The mobile outreach events provide residents with practical information to help prevent crises before they occur.
In March, pop-up events in supermarkets and community cafés will highlight why making a will is so important. Updates on dates and locations will be shared via the charity’s website and Facebook page.
The High Sheriff of Devon, Caroline Harlow, recently visited the Citizens Advice Exeter office in Dix’s Field to meet staff and volunteers and learn more about the programme.
She said: “To witness at first hand the valuable work Citizens Advice Exeter does for so many is inspiring. The campaign to raise awareness of the harms of gambling particularly resonated with my High Sheriff theme of the year. To take the information into the community and sporting venues helps to focus people on this hidden and harmful addiction. Thank you so much for being so proactive.”
Sue Julyan, CEO of Citizens Advice Exeter, said: “We know that scams, gambling harms and later life planning issues can have a huge impact on people’s wellbeing, finances and relationships.
"By taking our advice directly into the community, we’re able to reach people who might not otherwise ask for help, and give them the tools to protect themselves and their families. We’re incredibly grateful to all the partners, volunteers and venues who have supported these roadshows.”
The events provide educational resources and practical guidance to support residents in their daily lives. They also give people an opportunity to learn more about Citizens Advice Exeter’s wider services, which include help with housing, debt, benefits, employment and consumer issues.
Last year, Citizens Advice Exeter supported over 6,000 local residents, helping to resolve more than 20,000 issues.
