Lady Seaward’s Primary School in Clyst St George plans to replace its main and secondary entrance gates to boost security, including increasing height of main gate, and another on site.
A Devon school is looking to bolster its security with a plan for taller and more robust gates.
Lady Seaward’s Church of England Primary School in Clyst St George wants to replace its main and secondary entrance gates to help improve its security.
The plans, submitted to East Devon District Council, involve increasing the height of the main entrance gate, as well as a secondary one elsewhere on the site.
The school occupies a Grade II listed building dating from 1859, and so the plans involve retaining the walls that the gates will attach to.
The proposals, drawn up by Devon-based firm Noved Consulting, show that the existing modern steel gates would be replaced with new steel gates of matching design, but increased to 2 metres in height.
And the secondary gate, which in its existing form has been subject to damage due to “climbing and misuse” will be replaced with a steel gate that matches the character of the new main gates and will also be increased to 2 metres high.
Noved states it will “provide improved robustness and durability” and “improve safeguarding and deter unauthorised access”.
It added: “The proposals are justified by the need to address damaged and ineffective gates and to meet safeguarding requirements for a school environment.
“There is also the opportunity to deliver improvements without altering historic fabric.”
It said the proposals “represent a minor and sympathetic intervention that preserves the character and setting of the listed building, enhances security and safeguarding, and retains existing boundary features”.
The school was contacted for comment but was closed for the Easter holidays.
