East Devon MP Richard Foord is calling on the government to prioritise rebuilding Tipton St John Primary School, after £6.7 billion was allocated for school renovation projects in the recent Autumn Budget.
Mr Foord, who represents Honiton and Sidmouth, plans to push the Education Secretary to include the flood-prone school in the spending plans. The school, which has struggled with recurrent flooding issues, was identified by the Environment Agency a decade ago as posing a risk to life.
The community’s commitment has kept the campaign active, with parents, teachers, governors, and local representatives tirelessly advocating for relocating the school outside the flood zone. Devon County Councillor Jess Bailey has also been a strong supporter of the cause.
Mr Foord commented, "I will be reminding the Education Secretary about the urgent situation at Tipton St John Primary School, especially in light of the promising £6.7 billion funding for school rebuilding."
“The Conservative government has made various promises over the years but has yet to follow through. However, thanks to the determination of the community, this critical issue remains in focus. I am hopeful that we’ll soon see positive news for Tipton St John, with funding secured to rebuild the school within the village but safely away from flood risks."
