East Devon District Council is launching a new programme to support startups, offering advice, grants and training.
The programme will officially launch with a free startup event on Tuesday 17 March, 10am–2pm, at the East Devon Business Centre, Honiton (EX14 1SF). The event is aimed at anyone looking to start a business in East Devon, as well as those who have launched a business within the last three years.
The StartSmart launch event will bring together expert speakers, local startups and business advisers for a practical and inspiring half-day of learning and networking. Attendees will have the opportunity to:
- Build their business brand by getting the most out of LinkedIn and other social media platforms
- Improve content creation skills through a live photography and videography session
- Learn how to write engaging and entertaining written content for social media and email marketing
- Identify and promote their unique business brand
- Hear directly from local businesses about their startup journey
- Meet and network with other East Devon businesses and entrepreneurs
The event will take place at the East Devon Business Centre, with free onsite parking available. Light refreshments will be provided, alongside dedicated networking time and the chance to learn more about the free ongoing support available through the StartSmart programme.
What StartSmart offers
StartSmart provides a flexible menu of support, allowing participants to choose individual elements or take an integrated approach depending on their needs. The programme includes:
- Small business grants to support early development costs
- One-to-one mentoring from experienced business leaders in partnership with Exeter Innovation Accelerator, University of Exeter
- Specialist support with developing business plans
- Training workshops to build confidence and essential business skills
- Affordable workspace opportunities to help businesses grow (coming later)
- The programme is designed to support both aspiring entrepreneurs and early-stage businesses as they take their next steps, helping to deliver on our Economic Development Strategy.

- Startups and early-stage businesses (up to three years old)
- East Devon residents looking to turn an idea into a viable business

Following the launch, StartSmart will continue throughout 2026, with further workshops, mentoring and support opportunities available to eligible East Devon businesses.
