Exeter City Council Leader make a statement on planned protests in the city

The Leader of the City Council has issued a statement in support of Exeter’s diverse communities ahead of planned demonstrations in the city on Saturday.

A group known as British Unity Walk is planning a march through Exeter city centre, while a counter-protest by a group called Exeter is for Everyone is also due to take place.

Council Leader Cllr Phil Bialyk said: “Exeter is home to many diverse communities, and everyone has the right to feel safe and supported and feel that they belong - whatever their background, identity or country of origin.

“This Saturday will see opposing demonstrations in the city centre. We cherish the right for people to protest, and people should be allowed to express their views. But that needs to be tempered by ensuring that they do not cause offence to others.

“Exeter is a City of Sanctuary, and everyone is welcome here – our diversity is one of the great things about the city. Although passions may run high, I hope the day passes without incident.”
