A wreath has been laid in the Falkland Islands on behalf of the Lord Mayor of Exeter in memory of all those who lost their lives in the 1982 conflict.
The wreath was laid by former Exeter City Councillor and past Lord Mayor of Exeter, Percy Prowse, who was visiting the Islands. During his time there, he paid his respects at a military cemetery, reflecting on the sacrifices made by those who served.
Percy served the city for many years as a dedicated local councillor, representing residents and supporting community initiatives across Exeter. He later went on to become Lord Mayor of Exeter, a role in which he championed the city and its civic traditions. Alongside his work in local government, he also served as a Devon County Councillor.
Before entering public life, Percy spent more than 30 years with Devon & Cornwall Police, where he was well known in Exeter as a community-focused officer. His long-standing commitment to public service has made him a familiar and respected figure across the city.
The Falklands War in 1982 saw British forces deployed to retake the Islands following an Argentine invasion. The conflict lasted 74 days and resulted in the loss of 255 British service personnel and 649 Argentine military personnel. It remains an important moment in recent British military history, with commemorations continuing to honour those who gave their lives.
Exeter has a long-standing affiliation with The Rifles – formerly the Devon & Dorset Regiment – who hold the Freedom of the City. The act of remembrance in the Falklands reflects the city’s continued respect for the Armed Forces and those who have served.
