Exeter pubs open doors to Pint of Science 2024

Popular Exeter watering holes will play host to this year’s Pint of Science, treating the community to fascinating talks ranging from how AI could predict the weather to the future of psychedelic drugs.

The annual event, now in its 11th year, will serve pubgoers across hundred cities in the world with informative talks, demonstrations, live experiments, and a multi-city pub quiz competition.

From the 13-15 May, researchers from the University of Exeter and the MET office will be speaking at venues across the city, including the Bootlegger, the Mermaid and the Turks Head. Bringing together community members and enthusiastic scientists, the three-day festival will continue a tradition of showcasing unique research in a relaxed environment.

This year’s festival at Exeter features talks including: the effects of long COVID, mysterious links between blood sugar and arm problems, eating disorders, the role of AI in predicting the weather and whether psychedelics can be used for good.

Alongside the main talks, Exeter has a chance to partake in the largest ever multi-city pub quiz which will see audience members go head-to-head with other cities across the UK as they interactively tackle science-themed trivia.

Dr Praveen Paul, Co-Founder of Pint of Science, said: “It’s fantastic to see how a simple idea between a few friends has captured people’s imaginations and pushed scientific research into the spotlight. We should all have an opportunity to question and discover the breadth of research that is taking place right here in the UK.

“None of it would be possible without our enthusiastic and dedicated volunteers who work so hard to bring you a programme packed full of inspiring events, and encourage us all to be curious. The only difficulty is choosing which of the brilliant events to go to!”
