At 16.25 today (Monday), H.M. Coastguard requested the launch of the lifeboat following concerns that someone might have had been caught in a cliff collapse near Budleigh Salterton.
The Exmouth RNLI ILB D-805 George Bearman II and three volunteer crew launched at 16.32 and made best speed to the location.
Upon arriving on scene, a debris field was visible on the collapsed cliff face and what looked like elements of a tent and camping gear. Due to the inaccessible location, the Torbay Coastguard team used their drone unit to investigate the debris, whilst our volunteer crews conducted a shoreline search of the area.
Following the conclusion of the shoreline search, and after reviewing the footage from the drone, H.M Coastguard were satisfied that no one had been caught in the collapse and our volunteers were stood down.
This was one of our first operational deployments with the support of the H.M Coastguard drone unit and it proved very useful in quickly getting ‘eyes on’ to a highly inaccessible location, without the need to deploy teams onto the actual cliff face.
