Two picturesque waterfront towns in Devon have secured spots among the finest places to reside in the South West, as revealed by a renowned annual guide.
Exmouth and Dartmouth have earned places in the esteemed Sunday Times Best Places to Live list for 2024. Despite this recognition, neither town clinched the coveted top position.
Judges evaluated a range of factors, encompassing education quality, transportation infrastructure, broadband connectivity, cultural vibrancy, access to green spaces, and the vitality of local commerce.
In their assessment, Exmouth underwent a notable transformation, shedding its former image as a retirement haven to emerge as a magnet for younger demographics. This shift is attributed to its convenient rail links to Exeter, pristine sandy beaches, and a diverse range of housing options. A standout contributor to Exmouth's rejuvenation is Sideshore, an environmentally conscious watersports complex. Its inception during the pandemic serves as a prime example of revitalising seaside resorts with contemporary flair.
Meanwhile, Dartmouth was celebrated as an enchanting maritime enclave that transcends seasonal appeal, boasting breath taking waterfront panoramas at every corner. The judges lauded its dynamic calendar of culinary and musical festivals, flourishing allotment gardens, and vibrant sports clubs. The Flavel Arts Centre, administered by dedicated volunteers, stood out as a cultural epicentre, offering a rich tapestry of cinematic screenings, theatrical performances, and musical concerts, while nurturing local choirs and youth ensembles.
Additionally, the guide spotlighted several other noteworthy locations across the South West region. These include the historic charm of Cirencester in Gloucestershire, the coastal allure of Clevedon in Somerset, the artistic ambiance of Falmouth in Cornwall, the natural splendour of the Isle of Purbeck in Dorset, and the idyllic countryside setting of Tisbury in Wiltshire.
