Step into 2,000 years of history with Exeter’s free Red Coat Guided Tours. The new winter season begins on Wednesday 1 October and no booking is required.
Exeter’s award-winning Red Coat Guided Tours winter programme offers locals and visitors a unique way to discover the city’s past.
Running daily until 31 March, the tours are completely free and require no booking. Each walk is led by a knowledgeable volunteer guide, bringing to life the people, places, and stories that have shaped Exeter.
Winter tours include favourites such as ‘Medieval Exeter’, ‘Ghosts & Legends’, ‘Tudor Exeter’, and the two-hour ‘City Wall’ walk. Tours typically last 90 minutes and run from various starting points, with most departing from the Richard Hooker statue on Cathedral Green.
Tours operate with a minimum of two people per session and are limited to 15 participants per guide. Red routes on the schedule depart from the Custom House Visitor Centre on Exeter’s Quayside.
Children under 16 must be accompanied by an adult. Assistance dogs are welcome, and alternative routes are available for some tours to improve accessibility.
There are no tours on 25 and 26 December. A special Mystery Tour will run on 24 December and 1 January.
