Grandson of WW2 POW set to attend VJ Day anniversary ceremony

Exeter will mark the 80th anniversary of Victory in Japan (VJ) Day on Friday 15 August with a special ceremony at the War Memorial in Northernhay Gardens.

Exeter will mark the 80th anniversary of Victory in Japan (VJ) Day on Friday 15 August with a special ceremony at the War Memorial in Northernhay Gardens.

Of those attending, will be Terry Marsh from Shepton Mallet, whose grandfather Doug Marsh was a prisoner of war during the Second World War. Doug spent three years in Macassar Prisoner of War Camp in Indonesia, after HMS Exeter, on which he was serving, was sunk by the Japanese forces during the Battle of the Java Sea.

The ceremony will start at 3.30pm with a welcome from the Lord Mayor of Exeter, Cllr Anne Jobson, followed by a speech from the High Sheriff of Devon.

Local writer and artist Clare Bryden will deliver a specially written poem about VJ Day from the steps of the War Memorial.

This will be followed by prayers led by the Lord Mayor’s Chaplain. The Vice Lieutenant of Devon will read the Exhortation and the Kohima Epitaph and there will be a two minute’s silence.

The Civic Party will be joined by a Bugler from The Salamanca Band and Bugles of The Rifles, who will perform The Last Post and Reveille to conclude the ceremony.

Members of the public are more than welcome to attend.
