Five illegal e-bikes were seized in Exeter city centre after being found in breach of the Road Traffic Act. The bikes, classed as motor vehicles, failed to meet the legal requirements for Electrically Assisted Pedal Cycles (EAPCs).

Legal EAPCs must have a motor output of no more than 250W and an assisted speed limit of 15.5mph. Unlike illegal e-bikes, they do not require registration, insurance, or a driving license.

Authorities are reminding cyclists to ensure their e-bikes meet legal standards to avoid penalties and keep public spaces safe.
