Players from the Italian Women’s Rugby World Cup squad visited Exeter’s Underground Passages on Wednesday, enjoying a guided tour ahead of their opening match at Sandy Park this Saturday.
The team were shown around by Helen, one of the Underground Passages' experienced guides, who introduced them to the fascinating history of Exeter’s medieval tunnel system.
As part of their visit, Helen asked the players if they would be happy to pose for a group photo — which they gladly agreed to.
The tour offered a valuable cultural experience and a chance to explore the city before match day.
Exeter is the only city in the UK with underground passages of this kind. Originally constructed to bring clean drinking water into the walled city, these vaulted tunnels have intrigued visitors for centuries.
Tours begin with a short film, followed by a 25-minute guided walk through the passages. The accompanying exhibition features interactive displays, artefacts and detailed reconstructions.
Advance booking is recommended, particularly during weekends and school holidays.
