People getting a takeaway in Exeter are being encouraged to report any food or drink outlets supplying single-use plastics.
The reminder comes as the City Council’s licensing team was called out to a food outlet supplying customers with plastic forks.
In October, new legislation banned the sale of over-the counter and online single-use plastics. This includes plastic cutlery, drink stirrers, balloon sticks and any food and drink containers made of expanded and extruded polystyrene.
Cllr Ruth Williams, Lead Councillor for City Management, said that whilst the licensing team was involved in talking to a number of premises about them issuing plastic cutlery, the legislation is enforced by Trading Standards at Devon County Council.
“We’re keen to do our bit for the environment and would urge anyone who sees food and outlets supplying single-use plastics to customers to report this to Trading Standards at Devon County Council.
“Any single-use plastics being given to customers will end up in the waste bin and get sent for incineration, adding to the CO2 entering the atmosphere, something we’re keen to avoid.
“We are pleased that the business we visited, heeded the advice and stopped using the plastic cutlery, and that any others that are continuing to use single-use plastics will follow suit.”
