Detectives are seeking witnesses and video footage after a man was seriously assaulted in Ottery St Mary on Thursday 6 November.
It was reported there was an altercation on Broad Street at around 12.30am during which a man sustained serious head injuries and was taken to hospital for treatment.
It was further reported that a different man was assaulted at the scene but did not require medical treatment.
Detective Constable Jordan Pearce said: “There were still a lot of people in the area who had attended the Tar Barrels event, and it is possible that videos were captured of the incidents at the time.
“We are appealing for anyone who may have captured any video footage to come forward as they may have evidence that would support our investigation.”
A 53-year-old man from Ottery St Mary was arrested on suspicion of inflicting grievous bodily harm without intent.
A second man from Ottery St Mary, aged 49, was arrested on suspicion of assault by beating.
Both men have been released on bail, pending further enquiries.
