Residents and Visitors will be delighted that the RAF Aerobatic Team, the Red Arrows have confirmed their attendance and will headline an air display kicking off the Sidmouth Regatta weekend in style.
The news is particularly welcome after it was initially planned that the team would be overseas. Confirmation of attendance was received by Sidmouth Town Council after several days of intense planning and reorganisation of the team’s schedule by the RAF Events Team. The Air Display will be the first of three days of Regatta events and will take place on the afternoon of Friday 22 August.
In addition to the Airshow, this year’s Regatta Weekend will continue to feature community events, supported by Sidmouth Town Council and a network of local clubs and voluntary organisations. Sea based events will include Sailing and Gig Races and the annual Surf Lifesaving competition. Spectators will also be treated to a display from Sidmouth’s very own lifeboat, showcasing how they train to save lives at sea.
For many, one of the regatta highlights of the weekend will be the much anticipated return of the Raft Race, which will be organised by the Rotary Club of Sidmouth with sponsorship from South West Water. This much loved event, which delighted generations of residents, will see teams from across the Sid Valley taking to the water in home-made craft and wearing fancy dress. David Hodge President Elect of Sidmouth Rotary said “I am delighted that we have the outstanding support of Sidmouth Town Council, Sidmouth Watersports Hub and Sidmouth Life Boat in getting the raft race back up and running”
For landlubbers, there is a planned tug of war competition, a food court at the Ham on the Friday and a bar and entertainment at the Watersports Hub on Saturday. The ever popular fireworks display, organised by Sidmouth Town Council will also have a makeover this year, with a music and pyrotechnics extravaganza delivered by award winning Sonic Fireworks, winners of the prestigious British Fireworks Championships.
Sidmouth Regatta will take place from Friday 22nd to Sunday 24th August and include the Grand Firework Display on the Saturday evening. Keep a look out on www.sidmouth.gov.uk and www.visitdevon.co.uk/sidmouth for the latest information and exact timings once available.
