Sign up for charity walk including pint and a pasty

Rugby and walking fans across Exeter are in for a treat, thanks to the Exeter Chiefs Foundation Charity Walk taking place on Saturday 4 October.

The 10km route will look a little different from previous years, as for the first time it takes in much of the city’s Green Circle walking route. The Green Circle is managed by Exeter City Council, Devon County Council, Devon Wildlife Trust and the University of Exeter.

Starting at the Exeter Leisure-run Wonford Sports Centre, walkers will collect their t-shirts before heading out onto the route.

The walk will end at Sandy Park, where all participants will receive a ticket to watch the match between Exeter Chiefs and Newcastle Redbulls, a pasty and a pint.

This popular annual event has been revised this year to take in more of the city’s community and green spaces. The route follows the River Exe before reaching Countess Wear and finishing at Sandy Park in time for the match.

Cllr Duncan Wood, Lead Councillor for Leisure and Healthy Living, said: “We are very fortunate in Exeter to have a wealth of green space and with the Green Circle walking route circling the city, it’s a brilliant opportunity to show participants just some of the beautiful countryside on their doorstep.”

And there has never been a better time to enjoy the Green Circle thanks to a recent campaign funded by GWR that makes it easier for people to access the route, particularly from city centre railway stations. Better signage and wayfinding stickers have been added to make it easier for people to navigate their way around.

Keiron Northcott, Exeter Chiefs Deputy Chief Executive & Foundation Trustee said: “The Exeter Chiefs Foundation charity walk is the perfect way to introduce those who might be unfamiliar with the Green Circle and Wonford Sports Centre is the ideal location to start. We are excited about watching the walkers wind their way around the route on the day and thank Exeter City Council for lending us their facilities for the event.”

Organisers are looking for a small number of volunteers to help at the event. All volunteers will receive a match day ticket, together with the all-important pasty and pint! To apply to be a volunteer please contact beckyskinner@exeterchiefsfoundation.org.uk
