Thousands more homes benefit from Exeter food waste collection rollout

Another 2,000 homes in the city will soon be receiving weekly food waste collections.

The new collections will take place in the Burnthouse Lane and Wonford areas of the city.

Collections will start on Friday, 8 August, and will take place every Friday after this date.

The service is being rolled out gradually across the city.

More than half of households in Exeter now have the service, which prevents food waste from being thrown away in black bins and increases the city’s recycling rate.

Food waste is diverted to anaerobic digestion, where it ends up as a soil improver and fertiliser, as well as generating electricity.

Cllr Ruth Williams, Lead Councillor for City Management, said: “This is great news for all the residents who can now start using this service, which plays an important role in increasing our recycling rate and cutting the amount of waste thrown away in Exeter.

“The service has proved popular in areas where it has been introduced, and it is great that we have been able to add more than 7,000 new properties in recent months.”

Cllr Williams added: “We continue to work hard to reach everyone as soon as we are able to, and I appreciate residents’ patience as we work hard to introduce collections to more of the city.”

The latest properties to be included in the service will be receiving a pack containing information about the collections and caddy stickers this week.

Caddy deliveries will begin on 21 July and may take up to three weeks. There will be one black 23-litre kerbside caddy with a red lid and one five-litre grey/silver kitchen caddy.

Communal food waste facilities will be provided to properties served by communal bins.
