Children living in temporary accommodation in Exeter this Christmas are to receive a big bag of presents thanks to the generosity of people in the city.
Once again, Exeter Temple Salvation Army and its team of volunteers has come up trumps for its annual Christmas toy appeal.
The appeal – which has been running for over 20 years - asked residents to donate or buy new toys for children at Christmas and the response was incredible.
Around 30 bags for 45 children were this week collected by the City Council’s housing team from the Salvation Army’s base at Friars Gate for distribution to families living in temporary accommodation over the festive period.
Church members and volunteers at the Salvation Army are also providing pre-booked Christmas meals for anyone in need in the city and distributing Christmas cards made by Exeter schoolchildren to those who may not otherwise receive any.
Cllr Marina Asvachin, Lead Councillor for Housing, Homelessness Prevention and Customer Services, said: “What can you say about the Salvation Army – they do a fantastic job helping people in Exeter. The drive and energy of their volunteers and the generosity of the people of Exeter is a winning combination and I am so grateful to everyone who has played a part in helping to spread some joy this Christmas.”
Majors Carl and Elizabeth Di-Palma, of the Exeter Temple Salvation Army said: “Once again, the generosity of the people of Exeter has been overwhelming, at a time when many are feeling the pinch. This speaks volumes for Exeter citizens, and I’d like to thank each and every one of them.”
