Wales & West Utilities is progressing well with its work to upgrade gas pipes in the Fore Street area of Exeter.
The gas emergency and pipeline service started the project in July, and it is essential to keep the gas flowing safely to heat and power local homes and businesses, keeping people warm for generations to come.
The gas emergency and pipeline service has worked with Devon County Council to plan the project.
Phase one of the work finished in the middle of August, and it was agreed that phase two would commence after the planned women’s rugby event from 15 September. As part of the phase two work the following traffic management will be in place:
- A bus lane closure and a lane closure on Heavitree Road, whilst it will be closed to traffic heading out of town between Gladstone Road and Polsoe Road (15 September – 5 October)
- Road closure on Polsoe Road (15 September – 5 October)
- Bus lane closure on Heavitree Road and a road closure on Grendon Road (29 September – 14 October)
- Bus lane closure on Heavitree Road, whilst four-way traffic lights will be in place on College Road, Gladstone Road and Heavitree Road (13 – 26 October)

“While most of the gas network is underground and out of sight, it plays a central role in the daily lives of people across Exeter. Whether it’s heating your home, making the family dinner or having a hot bath, we understand how important it is for your gas supply to be safe and reliable and there when you need it.
“We know that working in areas like this is not ideal, but it really is essential to make sure we keep the gas flowing to homes and businesses in the area, and to make sure the gas network is fit for the future. We’ll have a team of gas engineers on site throughout the project to make sure our work is completed as safely and as quickly as possible while keeping disruption to a minimum.”
