A local community-led festival honouring those who have passed away is set to take place in St Thomas later this month.
All Souls Day is a cultural community led festival that provides a space for remembrance, grief, and celebration for anyone to attend.
This year’s festival will take place on Sunday 25 October at the Church of St. Thomas.
Inspired by traditions such as the Polish Zaduszki and the Mexican Día de los Muertos, the festival invites people from across Exeter to gather through creative workshops, performance, food, and shared ritual.
It is a participatory festival where people are invited to take part in creative workshops, make and bring meaningful objects to communal altars and share stories about loved ones, culture and traditions.
The event started in 2023, emerging from members of the St Thomas community and is part of ‘The Better Connections Project’, run by Inclusive Exeter.
The event’s organisers work year-round with local community groups, charities, individual artists and more to put together a program that holds a space for creativity, community and celebration.
Attendees can enjoy a welcome atmosphere as well as live music, performance pieces, creative workshops and a range of food.
All Souls Day was previously awarded £350 in funding from Exeter City Council’s Ward Grants to help support the event.
Cllr Liz Pole, Lead Councillor with responsibility for Communities, said: “Death and remembrance offer powerful opportunities to bring people together and strengthen connections within our communities, whether remembering loved ones or sharing histories, past achievements, events, traditions, compassion or creativity.
“This event promises a welcoming space for people from different backgrounds in Exeter to share stories, to honour those they have lost, to learn from one another, to connect and to create.
“This festival is a strong example of the impact that the Exeter Ward Grants funding can have, supporting projects that bring people together for common purpose within our communities."
