A new support programme is launching across Devon to help people who are finding work difficult because of their physical or mental health.
WorkWell offers free, personalised support for people aged 16 and over whose health is affecting their ability to stay in work, return to work after an absence, or find employment. Whether someone is managing a long-term condition, experiencing stress or anxiety, recovering from illness or injury, or simply feeling overwhelmed by balancing health and work, WorkWell is designed to help.
The service is built around one simple principle: everyone is different. That’s why every person referred to WorkWell is matched with a dedicated coach who takes the time to understand their situation, listen to what’s important to them and develop a personalised plan of support.
“WorkWell is here to help”
Jessie Leigh, WorkWell programme lead for NHS Cornwall, Isles of Scilly and Devon, said: “Most of us will experience a time when our health makes work harder than it should be. For some people, it can feel isolating or overwhelming, and they may not know where to turn for support.
“WorkWell is here to change that, offering free, personalised support that puts the individual at the centre. Whether someone wants support to stay in work, return after time away, or simply build their confidence and wellbeing, WorkWell is here to help.
“We’re really excited to be bringing WorkWell to Devon and helping more people realise they don’t have to face these challenges on their own.”
WorkWell coaches can help people explore workplace adjustments, access health and wellbeing services, build confidence, improve work-life balance, connect with local community support, and identify practical steps to achieve their employment goals.
The programme also works closely with employers, healthcare professionals and local organisations to create healthier, more supportive workplaces where people can thrive.
As part of the wider scheme, WorkWell is developing a network of Employer Champions across Devon. These employers will help promote good workplace wellbeing, share best practice and encourage open conversations about the relationship between health and work.
“I’d highly recommend WorkWell”
One person who has already experienced the benefits of WorkWell is Melanie Portlock, who sought support while managing a long-term back condition alongside work.
Melanie said: “I didn’t realise how much I was suffering in silence. Living with a long-term condition was affecting so many parts of my life, but I found it difficult to talk about what I needed. WorkWell gave me the space to have those conversations and helped me find practical ways to manage my health and work together.
“It’s turned around how I work and how I look after myself. I’d highly recommend WorkWell to anyone who’s struggling. You don’t have to struggle on your own.”
Accessing WorkWell support
Accessing WorkWell support is quick and straightforward. Individuals can refer themselves directly by filling in a simple online form, while referrals can also be made by GPs, healthcare professionals, employers, Jobcentre Plus work coaches and other support organisations.
Once someone makes a referral to ask for support, one of the friendly WorkWell coaches will be in touch within 72 hours.
There are no lengthy assessments or complicated processes to navigate – a simple referral is all it takes to start a conversation with a WorkWell coach, who will then work with the individual to understand their circumstances and identify the support that could help them stay in, return to or find work.
Free for both individuals and employers, WorkWell is funded by the Department for Work and Pensions and NHS England and commissioned by NHS Cornwall and Isles of Scilly. Support is delivered by coaches working within local partner organisations, ensuring people across Devon can access tailored advice and practical help close to home.
