A property in Exeter has been issued with a closure order following successful action by Devon & Cornwall Police working in partnership with housing association SNG (Sovereign Network Group).
On Thursday 23 July, a full closure order was granted by Exeter Magistrates’ Court, making it an offence for the occupants or their associates to enter the address for a three-month period.
Closure orders are an important tool that can be used to protect communities from persistent anti-social behaviour and criminal activity, helping to improve the quality of life for local residents and restore confidence in neighbourhoods affected by such issues.
Following ongoing concerns raised by members of the local community regarding criminality and anti-social behaviour linked to the address, officers gathered evidence and worked closely with SNG to build a case for enforcement action.
PCSO Sarah Bloor from the Exeter Neighbourhood Team said: "This order demonstrates our commitment to addressing the issues that matter most to local communities.
“We understand the significant impact that crime and anti-social behaviour can have on residents, and we will continue to take positive action where there is evidence of persistent offending.
"We would like to thank SNG for their support throughout this process, as well as members of the public who came forward with information and evidence.
“Tackling anti-social behaviour is most effective when police, partner agencies and local communities work together."
The case was strengthened by SNG's attendance at Court, where colleagues from the housing association provided evidence and responded to cross-examination conducted directly by the perpetrator.
Once the legal process is complete, the one-bedroom flat could be re-let to someone on Exeter City Council’s housing register, helping to provide a much-needed affordable home for residents in the city.
Helen Hann, SNG’s Regional Director Localities – South, commented: “Customers have a right to live safely in their neighbourhoods, free from crime, harassment and anti-social behaviour.
“This outcome highlights the importance of customers reporting anti-social behaviour to SNG and working with partner agencies to enable effective enforcement action so we can keep local communities safe.”
Anyone with concerns or information about antisocial behaviour in their area should report it to using the reporting tool on the police website or by calling 101.
