Exeter set for best solar eclipse in nearly 30 years

Exeter residents could be set to enjoy their best view of a solar eclipse in almost thirty years when it arrives on Wednesday 12 August.

With around 95% coverage of the sun expected in Exeter, this incredibly rare natural phenomenon could be the most impressive eclipse visible from the UK since August 1999, weather permitting.

The event is set to begin at around 6:18pm, reach maximum coverage at 7:15pm and end at 8:08pm, giving the perfect opportunity to enjoy the spectacle during a summer evening, as long as the conditions allow.

A solar eclipse takes place when the Moon passes between the Earth and the Sun, partially or totally obscuring the view of the sun for us.

There are two to five solar eclipses each year, with a total eclipse taking place every 18 months or so. Whether people can view that eclipse depends on where they are in the world.

There will not be a total solar eclipse visible from the UK until 2090, and no eclipse with over 90% coverage until 2081, making this a very special event.

Exeter and its surrounding areas offer vast landscapes and many high viewpoints, making it one of the best places in the country to get the best seat in the house.

Experts are reminding residents to never look directly at the Sun and that eye protection is essential, as the eclipse is not total.

ISO‑certified eclipse glasses, solar viewers or indirect viewing methods such as pinhole projectors are recommended but regular sunglasses are not safe for eclipse viewing.
