Exmouth Town Council wishes to reassure residents that the recently announced proposals for local government reorganisation in Devon, including the creation of new unitary authorities and the eventual dissolution of East Devon District Council, will not affect the role of Exmouth Town Council.
As the tier of local government closest to residents, Exmouth Town Council will continue to serve the community, represent local interests and deliver the services and facilities it currently provides.
The changes will primarily affect the Council’s relationships and ways of working with higher tiers of local government. As new unitary authorities are established, Town and Parish Councils across Devon will work closely with them to understand how services will be delivered in the future and whether there are opportunities for more services to be managed locally.
Exmouth Town Council has already begun initial discussions to better understand the implications of the transition arrangements for Town and Parish Councils within the new authority structure.
Town Clerk Lisa Bowman said:
“While there will be changes to the wider local government landscape, residents can be assured that Exmouth Town Council remains committed to serving the community as normal. We are actively engaging with partners to understand the implications of these changes and will keep residents informed of any significant developments. In time, there may be opportunities for Exmouth Town Council to take on additional local services, but it is too early to determine what this might look like in practice.”
The Council will continue to monitor developments closely and will provide updates to residents, community groups and local organisations as more information becomes available.
