Latest heatwave brings extra help for those sleeping rough in Exeter

People sleeping rough in Exeter are being given extra help to deal with the latest heatwave.

Exeter City Council has declared a Severe Weather Emergency Protocol (SWEP) to deal with the high temperatures this week.

The SWEP begun on Tuesday 11 August and will continue until 9pm on Friday 14 August as temperatures are expected to get as high as 32 degrees Celsius.

During the week, sun cream and extra supplies of water will be made available at two of the Council’s supported accommodation partners, Gabriel House and Prospects.

The Council will be working with partners and reviewing SWEP throughout the week.

Normally SWEP is declared during the winter months, when temperatures dip below zero and extra emergency accommodation is made available.

The Council is reminding members of the public that they can report someone they believe to be sleeping rough to StreetLink

StreetLink is also useful for people who are sleeping rough and want to find out about local support services and get help. They might be sleeping outside or in places not designed for people to live in, including cars or vans, doorways, and abandoned buildings.
