A major discount supermarket has submitted formal plans to develop a store in Devon’s newest town.
Lidl has put in proposals on the edge of Cranbrook, within the consented Tresbeare expansion area that is set to see just over 1,000 homes built on what is now agricultural land.
The expansion is also set to include a neighbourhood centre, open space, seating and public art.
Lidl’s plans for London Road also include four other retail and commercial units, which documents suggest could be used for the likes of shops or coffee shops, and other local uses, with the development having a total of 118 parking spaces including six rapid electric vehicle charging spaces.
A new road layout has also been proposed as part of the plans, with a new double mini-roundabout likely to be installed to help ease traffic flow on London Road and Younghayes Road.
A new estate road will run along the western and southern boundaries of the site.
The supermarket had already been canvassing opinion for the prospect of its store coming to Cranbrook, which has apparently seen 92 per cent of respondents supporting the idea and 93 per cent supporting the proposed other uses on site.
The new building will have solar panels on the roof, and an area of amenity space including outdoor seating outside the commercial units.
The discount grocer said it would ordinarily expect up to three HGV deliveries to the store each day, but that these take waste back to its regional distribution centre to reduce the amount of traffic movements to its stores.
The store is expected to open between 7am-10pm on Monday-Saturday, and 10am-4pm on Sundays.
Lidl now has more than 1,000 stores across the UK, meaning nearly one in 10 of its entire store network across Europe is now here.
