The National Trust is hoping to create a new path so that a circular walk at one of its prime East Devon destinations can be restored.
The charity has put in plans that proposed a new footpath to enable visitors to once again walk a loop that had to be closed after a landslide in 2024.
Although a workaround has been created on the remaining path network not impacted by the landslide, The National Trust said a more permanent solution was needed.
“The project will reconnect the existing accessible path network, enabling visitors to once again enjoy a continuous circular route around the site,” it said.
“The temporary diversion currently used is not a suitable long-term solution as it becomes muddy and slippery during winter months. This, combined with the path gradient, can present difficulties for visitors with reduced mobility or using mobility aids.”
The heritage organisation said works would include regrading the ground to create an “appropriate path alignment”, and that once the route had been prepared, a compacted stone surface would be installed, matching the specification, appearance and finish of the existing path network.
“This will ensure a durable, all-weather surface that integrates seamlessly with the surrounding route and provides safe, year-round access for visitors,” it stated in planning documents.
“By reinstating this section of path, the project will improve accessibility for a wide range of visitors, including those with mobility impairments, wheelchair users, mobility scooter users, and families with pushchairs.
“The development will restore connectivity within the site, improve the visitor experience and support safe and sustainable access to the landscape.”
It’s not yet clear when the application will be considered by East Devon District Council.
