Residents encouraged to help young trees through dry summer

Residents are being encouraged to lend a helping hand to young trees across Exeter as prolonged dry weather puts them under increasing stress.

Exeter City Council's Tree Team has been watering newly planted trees throughout the spring and summer, working five days a week to support more than 230 trees planted over the last three years.

However, the combination of warmer temperatures and dry conditions means many young trees would benefit from extra watering from the communities around them.

Young trees are particularly vulnerable during their first few years while they establish their root systems.

Without enough water, they can struggle to survive periods of drought and heat stress.

The Council is asking residents who live near recently planted trees to consider giving them an occasional drink, particularly during hot, dry spells.

Young trees are a vital part of creating a greener, healthier and more climate-resilient Exeter.

As they mature, they improve air quality, support wildlife, increase biodiversity and help keep neighbourhoods cooler during periods of hot weather.

A simple act of watering a nearby tree during particularly dry conditions can make a lasting difference to its chances of survival.

To be most effective, young trees should be watered slowly and thoroughly so the water reaches the roots.

A large bucket of water once or twice a week during prolonged dry weather is generally more beneficial than frequent light watering.

Residents can find practical guidance on when and how to water young trees by visiting the Arboricultural Association's young tree establishment guidance.

The Council continues to plant trees across Exeter as part of its wider commitment to enhancing biodiversity, improving green spaces and supporting the city's response to climate change.
