Residents urged to ‘Take No Chances’ during Gas Safety Week

Residents are being reminded of important safety advice during Gas Safety Week.

The event, now in its 16th year, takes place from 14th–20th September, bringing together organisations, businesses, community groups and Gas Safe registered engineers across the UK to help keep the nation gas safe.

The theme for this year’s Gas Safety Week is ‘Take No Chances’ and residents are being advised that if something does not feel right, it should not be ignored.

Top tips to stay gas safe:

  • Book an annual gas safety check with a qualified Gas Safe registered engineer.
  • Have gas appliances serviced regularly, in line with the manufacturer’s instructions.
  • Check the engineer is Gas Safe registered before any work begins.
  • Ask to see the engineer’s Gas Safe ID card when they arrive. This may be a physical or digital card.
  • Never attempt DIY gas work. However small the job may seem, always leave it to a qualified expert.

Taking the right action can help protect people from serious risks including gas leaks, fires, explosions and carbon monoxide (CO) poisoning. Carbon monoxide is often called the ‘silent killer’ because it cannot be seen, smelt or tasted.

Rob Denman, Director of Gas Services at Gas Safe Register, said: “Gas Safety Week brings supporters together to share vital safety advice and help protect the public from the risks of unsafe gas work.

“This year’s theme, ‘Take No Chances’, is a clear reminder that small actions, such as booking an annual gas safety check and checking that your gas engineer is registered and qualified to do the work, can make a big difference,” he said.

Exeter City Council tenants can get their boiler serviced and gas safety checked for free, with the aim of keeping residents safe and ensuring their central heating runs efficiently.

Gas Safe Register is the official register for legally qualified gas engineers. Residents can find or check a registered engineer in their area by visiting The Official List of Gas Safe Registered Engineers | Gas Safe Register
