Sidmouth have officially entered the competition to become the UK Town of Culture 2028!
In celebration of the town’s culture and heritage, Sidmouth Town Council have submitted a digital postcard to the Department for Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS). You can view the entry alongside others from across the country on the official UK Town of Culture Digital Map by visiting Town of Culture 2028 | Applicants – Google My Maps.
The Government’s Department of Culture, Media and Sport will be deciding who goes forward to the shortlist, with each shortlisted town receiving £60,000 to help deliver their full bids for the competition.
Three finalists – one small, one medium, one large town – will be chosen. The winner will be crowned UK Town of Culture 2028 and receive a £3 million prize. The two runners-up will each receive £250,000.
The Department of Culture, Media and Sport says: “In addition to the £3 million main prize and £250,000 finalist prizes, we anticipate that winning will lead to significant, demonstrable outcomes, including a boost in civic pride, greater participation in cultural activities, and the formation of enduring community partnerships. These partnerships will help build a strong sense of place and champion grassroots arts and culture, mirroring the proven impact of the UK City of Culture programme.”
