The four-legged residents of The Donkey Sanctuary are benefitting from a unique recycling initiative, with road sweeper brushes being repurposed as back scratchers.
In an inspired local upcycling initiative, East Devon District Council’s StreetScene department have donated a number of their used street sweeper brushes to the Sidmouth sanctuary, where they have been welcomed by the resident herd at the Donkey Assisted Activity (DAA) centre.
After a month or so of keeping the streets of East Devon litter-free, the plastic bristled brushes attached to the StreetScene road sweepers are normally disposed of in the general waste, but after being deep cleaned, they now have a new lease of life at the sanctuary.
The brushes not only offer the donkeys the ability to scratch those hard-to-reach areas, alongside regular grooming they help the herd shed their thick coats as the temperatures warm up. And with a number of brushes donated, they can be mounted at different heights making them accessible for the whole herd.
Councillor Geoff Jung, East Devon District Council’s Portfolio Holder for Environment – Operations, said: “This is a great example of reuse and recycling, supporting a local charity. It’s wonderful to see how the donkeys are benefitting from these old sweeper brushes, which would otherwise have gone to waste.”
The DAA donkeys support people in the local community with their self-development and wellbeing through a number of ground-based activities. The activities help individuals to better deal with challenging and stressful situations in everyday life, while also promoting positive attitudes towards donkeys.
Sid Miller, DAA Equine Assistant, added: “We are incredibly grateful to StreetScene for donating the brushes for our donkeys.
“It is not only lovely to see them already benefitting from this kind gesture, it is great to know we are recycling items that would have otherwise been destined for the waste – a double win!”
