The East Devon District Council Countryside Team plays a vital role in maintaining 19 miles of the South West Coast Path, managing the majority of the 26-mile East Devon section between Exmouth and Lyme Regis. The team’s work helps keep this internationally renowned stretch of coastline safe, accessible and welcoming for residents and visitors alike.
Stretching 630 miles from Somerset to Dorset, the South West Coast Path passes through some of the region’s most spectacular landscapes. The East Devon section forms part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site as well as passing through part of the stunning East Devon National Landscape, attracting visitors from across the UK and beyond. By maintaining this popular route, the team helps support local businesses, encourage tourism and protect an important contributor to the regional economy.
Welcoming almost nine million visitors each year to the South West, the route is far more than a scenic walking trail. Behind the spectacular views, essential maintenance takes place to ensure it remains safe and accessible. From repairing steps, gates and bridges to clearing vegetation from key viewpoints, the Countryside Team undertake a wide range of practical tasks that improve access while safeguarding the sensitive habitats and wildlife that make East Devon so special.
The benefits extend well beyond recreation. The entire trail is estimated to generate around £500 million in visitor spending annually and support approximately 11,000 jobs along the peninsula’s coastal corridor. Investment in its upkeep therefore delivers significant returns, helping to sustain local communities, strengthen the visitor economy and ensure future generations can continue to enjoy this remarkable coastline.
