One lane of Exeter’s A379 Bridge Road Bascule Bridge has closed again this morning (Tuesday 29 September) after a further crack was found beneath the bridge deck.
The lane, which was closed for several weeks in late summer, reopened on Tuesday 15 September following repairs to cracks and corrosion beneath the aluminium deck. Since then, a further fatigue crack has been found, and some deck planks are coming loose from the supports beneath them.
A specialist contractor is on site today to carry out the necessary repairs, which include welding and fitting replacement supports. The lane closure will reduce vibration from traffic while the work is carried out.
The lane is expected to reopen later the same day, subject to the repair being completed and checked.
The separate lane closure on the adjacent Swing Bridge has since been removed. Traffic will continue to use Bridge Road during the Bascule Bridge repair, but drivers should allow additional time for their journeys.
