Teignmouth Town Council has urged local companies not to miss out on the chance to bid for a new five-year cleaning contract. The authority is looking to appoint a company that will care for six public toilets including those yet to be installed at Eastcliff, The Point, Quay Road and The Den. The usual tendering process favoured by the UK Government tends to alert only national businesses with smaller operators often left unaware that an opportunity has arisen. With the contract worth a six-figure sum, Town Clerk Iain Wedlake is keen that the net is thrown as wide as possible. He said: ‘Whichever firm makes the successful bid for our cleaning contract, it will have to meet certain professional standards and prove that it is fit to act on behalf of local government. ‘I know that the bigger companies can do this but I’m sure we’ve local ones that could also make the grade. ‘I’m not suggesting we would favour one over another but we do feel it’s only fair that smaller operators who may not see the tendering ad on the Government website are at least in with a chance of being considered. ‘Teignmouth Town Council is investing residents’ money in a programme of improving public toilets at a time when many communities are facing the loss of such facilities. ‘In that same spirit we hope, potentially, to bolster the local economy by at least giving Devon businesses a chance to prove they’ve got what it takes.’ The official ad states that the Council ‘is to appoint a competent supplier to provide high quality cleaning services to the Council's public toilets which provide a positive image of the area, both for local service users as well as visitors and tourists.’ The Tender is for facilities at Eastcliff, The Point, Quay Road, The Den, Lower Brook Street and Jubilee Shelter. The contract is due to commence on November 1 2025 with an initial end date of October 31 2027 and a possible extension to October 31 2030 Full details can be found at https://www.find-tender.service.gov.uk/Notice/043041-2025?origin=SearchResults&p=1
