Teignbridge District Council approves budget for 2026/2027

Teignbridge District Council has approved its budget for 2026/27, ensuring that core local services remain protected while continued investment is made in the priorities set out in the One Teignbridge council strategy.

At a meeting of Full Council on Thursday 26 February, councillors approved next year’s budget, which includes a 2.99% increase in council tax. For the average Band D property, this is the equivalent of an extra £6.05 a year, bringing the council's share of a typical council tax bill to £208.33. The council will continue to provide 100% council tax support for those who need it most.

The budget maintains support for local voluntary and community organisations, with core grants rising by 4% for the next three years. The councillors’ community fund will continue at £1,000 per Member, helping small local projects and groups across the district. Revenue contributions to capital remain at £1.5 million, supporting improvements to essential local infrastructure.

Investment also continues in key One Teignbridge priorities, including affordable housing, town centre regeneration, environmental improvements and reducing carbon emissions. Housing delivery through the Homes4Teignbridge programme remains a major focus, supported by confirmed Homes England funding for new social rented homes. Further investment will help reduce the use and cost of temporary accommodation by increasing the supply of council-owned homes.

The capital programme also funds improvements to leisure centres, cycling and walking routes, and major infrastructure projects that support connectivity, the local economy and environmental wellbeing. These investments aim to create stronger communities, support local businesses, and improve the quality of life across Teignbridge.

Residents, businesses, and local organisations were invited to comment on the draft budget through a public consultation. There were 544 responses to the survey which ran from 18 December 2025 to 2 February 2026, where residents shared their views on Teignbridge District Council’s budget proposals and service priorities. Seventy-four per cent of respondents supported the proposed 2.99% council tax increase.

The approved financial plan also increases general reserves to £2.6 million, ensuring the council is prepared for unexpected pressures in the year ahead.

The full budget, including council tax resolutions and the financial plan to 2031, will be published on the council’s website.
