Teignmouth Youth Council members ‘absolutely enthused’ as new initiative begins

An initiative to create a Youth Council in Teignmouth has got off to a good start according to Mayor Cllr Cate Williams.

She told a meeting of the Full Council that the inaugural meeting of the youngsters’ forum had been held a week previously and attracted youth members people aged ten - 15 years.

‘We met in the Mayor’s Parlour and they were absolutely enthused,’ Cllr Williams told colleagues.

The meeting heard that a challenge set for their next get together on November 4 was for the young councillors to democratically select a chair, vice-chair and secretary, reflecting the same processes that applied to the Town Council.

‘I feel that as a council we are getting the voice of the youth from the youth,’ Cllr Williams said.

Deputy Mayor Cllr Lily Chasteau had also been involved in the project and said: ‘It was really nice, they were really nice kids, I’m really hopeful.’

Cllr Penny Lloyd asked if she could observe a Youth Council meeting but was advised that in the early stages the number of adults taking part would be capped with a view to boosting the youngsters’ confidence.

She heard, however, that there would be an opportunity to meet the young members in November as they had been invited to the next full council.
