Following the resignation of a Dawlish Town Councillor, a casual vacancy has been created on the Town Council. As there were insufficient requests for an election to fill the position, the Town Council will now proceed with a co-option process to select a new Councillor. The co-option procedure allows for local residents who meet the eligibility criteria to apply and potentially fill the vacant seat.

Interested individuals are invited to put themselves forward by completing the application and eligibility forms, which are available from the Town Clerk. The completed forms must be submitted to Andrew McKenzie, the Town Clerk, at Dawlish Town Council, Old Town Street, Dawlish, EX7 9AP, or by email to andrew.mckenzie@dawlish.gov.uk no later than noon on Tuesday, 25 March 2025.

Being a Town Councillor is an excellent opportunity for those passionate about making a difference in the local community. Those considering the role should be interested in planning, development, and representing the views of Dawlish residents. It is an opportunity to directly influence the future of the town and contribute to shaping local policies and decisions.

Eligibility Requirements

To be eligible for co-option, applicants must meet the following criteria:

  1. Be at least 18 years old on the day of nomination.
  2. Be a British citizen, an eligible Commonwealth citizen, a citizen of the Republic of Ireland, a qualifying EU citizen, or an EU citizen with retained rights.
  3. Additionally, applicants must meet at least one of the following conditions:
    • Be registered as a local government elector in the Parish of Dawlish.
    • Have owned or rented land in the Parish of Dawlish for the past 12 months.
    • Have lived in Dawlish (or within 4.8km of its boundary) for the last 12 months.
    • Have worked within the Parish of Dawlish for the last 12 months.

The Town Council encourages all eligible individuals who are committed to their community and eager to make a positive contribution to apply for this role. The successful applicant will play a key role in representing the views and needs of local residents.

For further information on the co-option process, or to obtain the application forms, please contact Andrew McKenzie at the Town Clerk’s office.
