Violent Devon offender jailed for crime spree during which he bit off man’s ear

A violent offender has been sentenced to seven years in prison with a further two years on extended licence for a six-month crime wave in which he bit off a man’s ear and boasted about it.

Webb was also the ring leader for a violent robbery as well as stabbing a man who was on a night out in a third incident.

Kai Webb, 28, previously of Teignmouth, was sentenced at Exeter Crown Court on Tuesday 7 October after pleading guilty to causing grievous bodily harm, causing grievous bodily harm with intent, robbery and possession of a bladed article in a public place.

Webb’s sentence for this set offending will begin at the end of a current sentence he is serving for another violent crime which ends in December of this year.

The court heard how the first incident took place on 29 April 2023 at around 3am.

The victim in this incident had been out enjoying drinks in Market Street, Newton Abbot when an altercation took place.

During the altercation the victim fell to the floor with Webb on top of him. Webb pressed his face close to the victim and bit his ear, resulting in a part of it detaching.

Webb was dragged by his shoulders by door staff and heard boasting ‘I just bit his ear off’ as blood dripped from his face.

The victim was rushed to hospital and given emergency treatment. Unfortunately, an attempt to reattach the ear part was unsuccessful and the victim lives with permanent disfigurement.

The next offence took place in Teignmouth on 26 July 2023. The victim had been at a music festival and on the way to his motorhome was approached by a large group asking for a light.

The leader of the group, Webb, demanded the victim’s Burberry umbrella. Webb then stole the umbrella, broke it and hit the victim across the face with it.

The victim attempted to run away but was pursued before being further assaulted and robbed.

During the incident Webb produced a knife and cut the victim’s hand as he tried to protect himself. Webb and two other individuals demanded the victim’s coat and bag which he gave to them.

In the bag was £300 in cash and a Samsung phone. Webb was seen afterwards on CCTV wearing the victim’s coat.

Two youths were sentenced previously in connection to this incident.

The final incident for which Webb was sentenced was a stabbing on 14 October 2023.

The victim was at a bar in Teignmouth watching a live music. At around 10pm he was outside talking to band members when he was approached by a man he had known some years ago.

The approaching man was in the company of another man unknown to the victim, later identified as Webb.

Webb aggressively spoke to the victim, and when he replied telling him to go away Webb punched him to the face and offered him a fight around the corner.

All three men then went around the coroner into a side lane. Once away from view the victim saw Webb holding a small knife.

The victim attempted to punch Webb thinking he needed to stun him to get away. However the punch missed and he fell to the floor.

At this point Webb approached him from behind and stabbed him in the back. Webb’s friend also landed a blow on the victim. The victim was taken to hospital to be treated for a stab wound and Webb was later located and arrested.

The other offender was given a community-based punishment in September and ordered to pay compensation to the victim.

Police Staff Investigator Helen Pring said: “Kai Webb is an incredibly dangerous individual who has demonstrated a constant willingness to inflict serious violence upon people unknown to him.

“Two of the three offences for which Webb has been sentenced involved him carrying a knife and they could so easily have proved fatal.

“All three of these victims suffered serious injury at the hands of Webb and continue to live with the effects of what happened to them.

“I would like to thank all three for remaining engaged and helping to secure this sentence. I am pleased the community will be protected from Webb for some time.”
