Two shouts over the weekend kept the Torbay RNLI Volunteers busy
On Friday evening, 30th May at 7:08pm, the Severn-Class All-Weather Lifeboat (ALB) launched to assist a 30-foot motor vessel with two people on board that reported it was taking on water. Quickly crossing the bay as the first air displays for the English Riviera Airshow were beginning overhead, the ALB arrived at the vessel situated just off Thatcher Rock, Torquay, shortly afterwards.
Two of the crew of seven then boarded the vessel along with a salvage pump and were able to pump out the water and prevent further significant water ingress. Appearing to be due to a faulty water pump, it was decided to tow the vessel back to Torquay Harbour for the safety of the motor vessel’s crew and for further investigation.
The ALB then returned to the Torbay Lifeboat Station in Brixham Harbour as was refuelled and ready for service 9pm.
In a further shout on Saturday, 31st May at 12:21pm, the Inshore Lifeboat (ILB) was launched following a report of a distress signal from a Personal Locator Beacon (PLB) being received in the area of Torquay Harbour. The ILB crew of three, working with the Torbay Coastguard Rescue Team (CRT) and a team from Tor Bay Harbour Authority & Beaches were able to locate a jet-skier who was testing his PLB on the pontoon and inadvertently sending a distress call.
The ILB was back at the lifeboat station, refuelled and ready to go by 1:35pm.
