A cherished local landmark is being brought back to life as restoration works are now underway on the historic clock of Old Maids Perch on Torquay seafront.

The project, funded through our Repairs and Maintenance Budget, marks a significant step in preserving the town’s heritage.

The clock, which had remained frozen at 6:25 for at least a decade, was carefully removed from its position in September 2025. It was transported to the Clocks of Cumbria workshops, where specialist restoration is currently in progress.

The clock is undergoing a full restoration, including replacement of its cracked dial, cleaning, and repainting in black gloss. A new master clock and heavy-duty slave movement will improve accuracy while retaining the original hands. LED backlighting and upgraded electrical systems in the undercroft are also part of the works. In addition, the remaining railings surrounding the clock will be repainted by our Facilities Management team in the spring.

Old Maids Perch, named during the Victorian era, holds a special place in local lore. It is said to have been a favoured spot for elderly ladies to gather and enjoy the sweeping views across the Bay. The beauty spot that paused for ten years is finally ready to run like clockwork again.

Restoration work of the clock will begin week commencing 17 November and is anticipated to take the full week. The under-croft sitting area will also be closed off for the whole week to facilitate the return of the clock.

Councillor Jackie Thomas (Cabinet Member for Events, Tourism, Culture and Corporate Services) said:

“The Council is proud to support the restoration of this beloved timepiece and looks forward to its return, where it will once again mark the passage of time for residents and visitors alike. Its return will not only mark the passage of time but also symbolize our commitment to preserving the heritage and character of our community.”
