Torbay garage site could become houses

Fresh plans for seven homes on the site of a Torbay garage have been lodged with the local planning authority.

Two previous applications for houses on the site of the Gliddon Ford garage at Churston were turned down. 
The site is currently a ‘brownfield’ hard-standing area with a garage building and some other single-storey structures. It is bordered by school playing fields, an archery range and the main Paignton to Brixham road.
An outline application for nine homes on the site was turned down in 2021, and in 2023 a proposal to demolish the existing garage and build nine homes was also refused.
Applicants Gliddon Ford say the latest plan addresses the objections which halted earlier versions. They say it is a sustainable development which will make a ‘modest’ contribution to the bay’s housing needs.
It is more spacious than the development which was refused, and does not have an ‘overbearing impact’ on neighbours, according to the applicants. It offers safe access for cars and pedestrians.
The applicants say their proposals will not spoil the appearance of the site and will give it a more appropriate use. It will have a low impact and will provide high quality development on a brownfield site.
It could be built quickly to contribute towards Torbay’s housing needs.
“It is considered that there would be no unacceptable adverse impacts that outweigh the benefits of the proposal,” they say. “There is no reason why the application should not be granted approval.”
