Twenty homeless people in Torbay could be given a fresh start as the council considers a new project to convert a disused residential care home.
The un-named care home in Torquay would offer round-the-clock support not currently available in the bay.
The council’s cabinet is likely to set the project in motion when it meets next week.
Members will see a report which points out that temporary accommodation in Torbay is currently dispersed and unsupported, and intervention is needed. Around 80 adults live in bed and breakfast accommodation with no cooking facilities.
The new project would support the increasing number of elderly people becoming homeless, or those with mental health or ill health needs. It is not designed to support people with ‘substance misuse’ issues.
It aims to improve the service as well as saving up to £200,000 a year on bed and breakfast housing.
An existing national housing provider has already expressed an interest in taking on the project.
