People in Exeter are being warned about scam house-to-house calls.
The warning comes after a local resident received a knock at their door from a man claiming to be from the City Council, asking for a payment of £600 to clear a blocked sewer.
The householder was told there was a problem with the sewage drains in the area and to prevent sewage coming up through his toilet he would need to make a payment.
The householder became suspicious and refused to make the payment.
Exeter City Council confirmed that the visit was a scam and the person calling was not a representative of the Council.
A spokesman for the Council said they would not ask residents to make a payment on the doorstep and urged people to report any similar incidents to the police. It also urged people to contact the Council if they were unsure about the validity of a home visit.
“We would ask people to check identification closely and if in any doubt contact the Council on 01392 277888.”
